A weekend of fishing, learning and fun for the whole family at Hjelmås — a course evening, an open sea fishing competition and a family day.

A weekend of fishing, learning and fun

The festival is a joint effort between Alver Havfiskeklubb, Hjelmås Handelslag, UL Heimhug and Bygdelaget 5915.

Friday 21 August

Course and talks

Ungdomshuset Ljosheim, Hjelmås · 18.00–21.00

Endre Hopland from Fiskeskolen shares techniques, species knowledge and how to rig for the fish you are after. Free and open to all — but places are limited.

Saturday 22 August

Sea fishing competition

The Osterfjord and Hjelmås quay · 08.00–17.00

The main competition on the Osterfjord, with everyone gathering at Hjelmås quay at 17.00. Prize giving on the quay afterwards.

Sunday 23 August

Family day

Hjelmås · 10.00–15.00

Magic show, bouncy castle, face painting, horseshoe throwing, market stalls, barbecue, coffee and cake — and pirates on the quay. Family fishing competition from 11.00.

The competition in brief

The full rules, including the species list and points, are on a separate page. Everything is also gone through at the course evening on Friday.

Entry fee
NOK 200 per person. Entry closes Saturday 22 August at 12.00.
Team competition
A team is 1–3 people, and you may enter alone as your own team. Prizes: best team, longest and heaviest fish — plus a main prize drawn among the teams with at least 5 points.
Time and area
Mandatory skippers' meeting at Hjelmås quay at 07.30, joint start at 08.00. Then fish anywhere within the Osterfjord system. The app opens for registration at 08.00 and closes at 17.00. Everyone gathers at Hjelmås quay at 17.00.
Points
Once per species — new species earn new points. Longest and heaviest fish are also awarded.

Main prize draw

Rod and reel set worth around NOK 8,000

Every team with at least 5 points takes part in the draw. One winner is picked from the team that is drawn — and the prize is a complete set: a Prey Jig Stick V2 500 g with a Prey Winder PLD12 and 500 m of Lawson MX8 braid.

Friday · course

No app needed. Free and open to all, but space in the hall is limited — competitors get priority. Come early.

Saturday · banquet

The banquet is cancelled — too few signed up. The prize giving moves to Hjelmås quay instead, right after everyone gathers at 17.00.

Sunday · family day

No app — sign up on the quay from 10.00. You are given a slip where name and phone number must be filled in, and you hand it in with your fish at the weigh-in with the jury from Alver Havfiskeklubb.

Price: children NOK 50 · adults NOK 100 · family NOK 150.

Children must be accompanied by an adult, and wear a life jacket near the water.

Practical

Good to know

Where
Hjelmås on the Osterfjord in Alver municipality, about an hour north of Bergen — the photo at the top of the page. The competition finishes at Hjelmås quay, and Sunday's family day fills the whole quayside.
The course evening
Takes place in Ungdomshuset Ljosheim, the community hall at Hjelmås.
Food
Kiosk on Friday evening. Barbecue and market stalls on the family day.
Children
Under-16s are welcome at the course evening accompanied by an adult. On the family day on Sunday, children must be accompanied by an adult.
Safety
Children must wear a life jacket near the water.
Equipment
No tackle or life jacket of your own? You can borrow both from BUA.
Parking
You cannot park on the quay if you are fishing. Parking is planned at Arilds port, Hjelmås marina and the levelled area towards Helleåsen. That is the plan as it stands — it may change, so follow the signs on the day.
Shower and changing
Available at the shop at Hjelmås — useful after a long day on the fjord.
Accommodation
Two of our sponsors have rooms. Alver Hotel at Alversund is the closest. Kilstraumen Brygge at Austrheim has cabins and apartments — a little further away, so you will want a car. Contact them directly for prices and availability.

The evening runs until 21.00. The talk itself starts at 19.00, so come early.

Endre Hopland from Fiskeskolen, together with members of Alver Havfiskeklubb, shares useful knowledge about species, techniques and the rigs that get fish on the hook.

Kiosk

The youth club sells simple food and drink — soft drinks, coffee and hot dogs.

Free and open to all, but places are limited — so be quick. Those taking part in Saturday's competition get priority. Under-16s are welcome accompanied by an adult.

Sea fishing competition

Competition on the Osterfjord

Mandatory skippers' meeting at Hjelmås quay at 07.30, and joint start at 08.00. Then free choice of fishing spot — within the Osterfjord system. Prizes: best team, longest and heaviest fish — plus a main prize drawn among the teams with at least 5 points.

The app opens for registration at 08.00 and closes at 17.00. The last moment to register a catch is therefore 16.59.

Everyone gathers at Hjelmås quay at 17.00 — and boats taking part must be back alongside the quay by then.

NOK 200 per person

Entry through FishComp. Entry closes Saturday 22 August at 12.00. A team is 1–3 people (4 if someone on the team is under 16), and you may enter alone as your own team.

After 17.00

Prize ceremony

Longest fish is control-measured and heaviest fish is weighed on the quay using the same scale — the fish must be brought in, not released. One and the same fish can only enter one of the two categories.

Prizes for the five best teams, longest and heaviest fish (see the prizes). In addition there is a main prize draw: every team with at least 5 points takes part, and one winner is picked from among the members of the team drawn.

The Saturday banquet is cancelled — too few signed up. The prize giving moves to Hjelmås quay instead, right after the weigh-in.

Activities for everyone

Magic show, bouncy castle, face painting, horseshoe throwing, a big fishing pond for the kids, guess the weight of the bluefin tuna, market stalls and entertainment with song and music. The youth club runs the barbecue, coffee and cake.

And pirates are coming to the quay.

Family competition sign-up

Sign-up happens on the quay — no app. Once you have signed up you are given a slip where name and phone number must be filled in. Take it with you.

Fishing starts

A family competition where the joy of fishing comes first. When you come in with a fish, hand your slip to the jury from Alver Havfiskeklubb, who weigh and record the catch. The competition ends by 14.00 at the latest.

No fishing tackle? We have equipment to borrow for free — just ask at the quay.

Join a boat on the fjord

On the family day you can join a boat and fish out on the fjord. Fuel is paid directly to the skipper. More information to come.

Prize giving on the quay

The exact time depends a little on how many take part. Awards for heaviest, longest and smallest fish, ideal weight, best family and dirtiest boat — and honours such as ugliest, cutest, toughest and spikiest fish. Over 50 medals are handed out, plus goodie bags and gift cards. See all the prizes →

Children must be accompanied by an adult all day, and wear a life jacket near the water.
